My Favorite Scene
I pick the scene where Major Motako Kusanagi stares at the city and doubts her identity. Her body is almost fully cybernetic, with only her human “ghost” left. This scene explores the boundary between physical bodies and virtual digital selves, a key topic from our course. This moment matters because it introduces the film’s central question: if consciousness can be digitised, what truly defines a person? It connects directly to ideas of networked existence simulation.
Reflections
Ghost in the Shell made me rethink digital identity and control. Just like the Major, we create digital versions of ourselves online. Our online data can be stored and shaped by outside system. The film’s themes still apply today. Every time we use social media, we leave digital traces. It makes me wonder who holds power over our online selves, and where the line between real and simulated lives.
