Indigenous Data Sovereignty

Personal Reflections

Sovereignty is the right for a group to manage its own affairs.

Data sovereignty means people control their own information by their own cultural rules.

Indigenous communities have had their data collected by outsiders without consent. Indigenous data sovereignty allows them to decide how their cultural and community data is used, to stop misuse.

National Data Sovereignty: Meta Case

Australia forced Meta (Facebook) to pay for local news on its platform.

Meta disagreed and removed Australian news content.

This shows conflict between national rules and powerful global tech companies. Governments can make laws, but big platforms can resist.

Core Principles & Facebook Application

Three core principles: Ownership, Control, Access

1. Ownership: Indigenous communities own their data.

2. Control: They decide how data gets used.

3. Access: They can get their own data.

For Facebook: Indigenous groups should set their own rules for community‑related data. They need to own, control and access their collective information.Platforms hold most digital power, so full Indigenous data sovereignty is hard to achieve, but these principles guide fairer data practices.
